A bank returned or rejected a check

What to check when a printed check is not accepted.

Last updated Aug 3, 20261 min read

Rejections nearly always trace back to the MICR band or the stock.

  • Confirm MICR toner or MICR ink was installed for that run.
  • Confirm the run printed at actual size.
  • Compare the band against a real check from the same account, character by character.
  • Confirm the stock size is one the bank accepts, especially for a personal check printed on business size stock.
  • Confirm nothing was printed inside the bottom band.
  • Ask your bank for a specification sheet if a check is ever rejected.
