What you need before you print a check

The short list of supplies and information to gather before your first check run.

Last updated Aug 3, 20261 min read

Printing your own checks needs four things: blank check stock, a printer, MICR toner or ink, and the details of the bank account the checks are drawn on.

Supplies

  • Blank check stock in the format you want, business or personal.
  • A laser printer is highly suggested. MICR ink is available for some inkjet printers, so check with your manufacturer if that is what you have.
  • A MICR cartridge that fits your printer model. Swap your regular black cartridge back in when you are not printing checks.

Information

  • Your business or personal name and address exactly as it should appear on the check.
  • The bank name and bank address.
  • The routing number and account number.
  • The next check number you want to print.
  • One existing check from the same account, if you have one. Check Capture can read its MICR structure.
