A laser printer with a MICR toner cartridge is the recommended setup and is what most check printers use.
Inkjet is not ruled out. MICR ink does exist for some inkjet printers, so check with your printer manufacturer to see whether they offer MICR ink or can point you to a compatible source. Even so, a laser printer with MICR toner is highly suggested.
